How to Choose Wedding Jewellery

How to Choose Beautiful Wedding Jewellery Without Breaking the Budget

Your wedding jewellery will appear in almost every photo from the day. It will catch the light in your first dance shots. It will be visible in close-ups of your hands, your neck, your ears. Twenty years from now, you will look at those photos and either love what you see or wish you had chosen differently.

I have helped hundreds of brides choose their wedding jewellery, and the most common mistake I see is buying gold plated pieces that look stunning on the day but tarnish within months. Your wedding jewellery should last as long as your marriage. Here is how to make that happen without spending a fortune.

Gold Filled vs Gold Plated: Why This Matters for Your Wedding

Gold plated jewellery has a gold coating thinner than 0.5 microns. It can tarnish, flake, and turn green within weeks. Gold filled jewellery has a gold layer that is 50 to 100 times thicker, mechanically bonded to the base metal. It lasts 10 to 30 years.

For your wedding day, this means:

  • Gold filled will look identical in your anniversary photos as it did on the day
  • You can wear your wedding jewellery every day afterwards without worrying
  • Your bridesmaids’ gifts will not end up in a drawer within a month

All of my gold pieces are 14ct gold filled. Not plated, not vermeil, not "gold tone." You can browse the full range in my gold collection.

Matching Jewellery to Your Neckline

The neckline of your dress determines which necklace length works best. I covered this in detail in my guide to matching jewellery to your wedding dress, but here is a quick summary:

  • Strapless or sweetheart: A collarbone necklace sits perfectly. 16 to 18 inches.
  • V-neck: A pendant or delicate chain that follows the V. 18 to 20 inches.
  • High neck or boat neck: Skip the necklace. Focus on earrings and a bracelet.
  • Off-the-shoulder: Short, close-fitting necklaces or chokers work beautifully.

If you are unsure, send me a photo of your dress and I will suggest options. I do this for brides all the time and genuinely enjoy it.

Coordinating Bridesmaids and Hen Party Permanent Jewellery

My Create Your Own range is perfect for bridesmaid sets. You choose a shared element (the same metal, or the same gemstone accent colour) and then let each bridesmaid personalise their piece. Same palette, different styles. It looks intentional in photos and each person actually wants to wear theirs again.

Permanent jewellery for hen parties has become one of my most requested activities. Instead of matching t-shirts, the bridal party each gets a permanent bracelet welded on. It takes about ten minutes per person, prices start from £45, and you leave with jewellery that genuinely lasts forever. I can set up at your accommodation, at a salon, or at a venue.

What to Spend and Planning Your Timeline

Here is my honest advice on wedding jewellery budgets:

  • Spend more on pieces you will wear daily. A gold filled bracelet or studs that becomes part of your everyday look is worth it. From £18.
  • Save on statement pieces you will only wear once. Sterling silver at £12 to £25 gives the same visual impact.
  • Do not overspend on bridesmaid gifts. A £25 handcrafted bracelet in real silver beats a £75 plated set from a department store.

My full wedding jewellery collection starts from £12. I handcraft every piece to order, so allow 5 to 7 working days for standard orders and 7 to 10 days for Create Your Own. For hen party bookings, book at least 4 weeks in advance during peak season (May to September).

If you want advice, I am always happy to help. Drop me a message through my contact page or on Instagram. You can read more about my studio in Wales and how every piece is handcrafted.
